Site wants registry utility
FILExt
is a premier supplier of information about windows file extensions. When users encounter an unknown file extension. then can click in a Windows dialog to be taken to a Microsoft site where there will be referred to FILExt.
To provide more convenient service to users, Tom at FILExt has long provided a program to allow users to conveniently adjust the windows registry so that users are taken directly to FILExt. FILExt has offered just such a program in the past but wanted a complete re-write to accomplish two goals:
- support Vista as the current program supported XP and prior
- reduce the program size from over 700 KB to a few KB
Simple solution: reg files
FILExt already had .reg files which could be run to invoke the registry editor to make the registry changes to either XP or Vista. To relieve the user from picking the proper one, an invisible batch file picks the right .reg for the user system. The user interface consists of the screen shown. It is a specialized type of html file called an HTA. All of these files are packed up using HtmlApp Studio using a point and click interface into a single 20 KB executable file.
Customize to build your own solution
You can customize the FILExt solution for deploying .reg files with a point and click interface in HtmlApp Studio. Download and install HtmlApp Studio. In the projects tab, click Browse for projects on web, then click the link available project downloads. All the required files are installed into HtmlApp Studio and your efforts are jump started with a working model.
